Building your food truck business to grow. There’s no doubt that owning a food truck has much potential to become a great lucrative business. As humans, we do need to eat 3 times a day. At the same time, it can be one of the most difficult business’ to keep up. Hard labor-intensive work. It is a rather easy business to start in the beginning, with a fairly low start up cost. This attracts plenty of aspiring entrepreneurs. Those who love the restaurant industry and to cook. Once in the industry, it becomes a lot more difficult that it seemed. While the growth of the industry is on the rise, food trucks are closing almost as fast as new ones are opening up.
I – The Food Truck Industry:
Consider one survey that we took:
- In the city of Houston, around 60% of the food trucks have not been in business for more than 2-3 years.
The question is: Why is it so hard for food trucks to stay open?
In the same multiple question survey that we took, we found:
- 84% of food truck owners worked in their truck(s), doing the cooking, the cleaning, the booking, the shopping. The list goes on. They are the business. Without them, there is no food truck.
- 89% of food truck owners had there way of doing things, but had nothing written down.
Additionally, during our survey, we gathered that 73% of the owners only have one truck. With about 70% wanting to grow and expand their trucks into more! But they didn’t know how to. Nor did they trust anyone. One owner claimed would claim that “it is hard to find reliable help, much less someone who will keep the truck in the condition we would like”. And this wasn’t the first or only time for a food truck owner to make this statement.
Back to the 84% of food truck owners doing the majority of the work themselves. It is creating limitations for those 70% that want to franchise or build out a restaurant. The growth of a business is lying underneath the power of documentation. Systems. A way of doing things, exactly how you do them, over and over. The purpose is to create a business where, every single problem is already solved. The one in charge of the food truck knows when, where and how to buy, how to run it exactly the way you want. It’s the recipe to your business. It’s the way you envision your dream to be. So that every single standard is met, and every food truck delivers the same consistent product. It’s building the food truck creating a business that runs itself, and with this, it enables you to expand and franchise out. Even if that it not in your dreams, it will free you from the cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping. It will free your time for higher responsibilities as the owner.
II – Growing you food truck business:
Let’s look at a few examples though. Examples of ordinary people, who started incredible companies. And we aren’t looking at these examples to honor them, or to make everyone think that they are smarter, or better. Because they aren’t. We aren’t comparing to belittle anyone. We’re looking at these examples to show you that yes. It can be done. That nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it, if you have the right determination.
McDonald’s – 39,198 fast food restaurants worldwide. Serving about 68 million customers a day. That’s roughly 1% of the world population. With 210,000 employees.
Starbucks – 32,660 coffee shop restaurants worldwide. Serving about 13.7 million customers a day. With 349,000 employees.
Pizza Hut – 18,703 fast food restaurants worldwide. Serving over 11,500,000 pizzas per day. With 300,000 employees.
The secret to these companies isn’t that they have some special power. Or that they have some special knowledge or advantage. It is the simple fact of knowing how to implement the “how to” systems into their restaurant.
III – The founders of these great companies
Ray Kroc considered the founder of McDonald’s was a salesman trying to sell milkshake machines for a living to restaurants and businesses. He replicated their system 39,198 times, 39,198 restaurants.
They all had a vision of exactly how they pictured the company to be, and implemented it. Where every single franchise, or even just one location, would work without the owner. It would work itself time and time again.
